Historic Mansion turns 100

Some events only happen every one hundred years. 2010 marks the 100th birthday of “The Norland”, Southern Alberta’s rare historic site east of Lethbridge. The Victorian-style mansion was built by C. R. Daniel in 1910 and became a popular recreational spot among family and friends in the 1920’s. The Norland, as C. R. Daniel affectionately called it, is now owned by the Fritz family of Lethbridge and continues to host events such as weddings, receptions, and other events on the 5-acre site.

To mark this occasion, a special celebration is planned for Sunday, July 4th, 2010, complete with music and dance performances, all under a 5400 square-foot high-peak pole tent. The Fiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble will perform some selections from their latest production “Inspiración”. The Spanish art form of flamenco has been gaining popularity worldwide for its razor-sharp rhythms and passionate dance forms.

The flamenco performance will be part of the afternoon’s festivities at the Norland Estate. Other festivities will include music, portraits, carriage rides, Spanish dancing, horse driving and dressage, h’orderves, and self-guided tours of the property and mansion. The dressage riding event will be performed at Don Toney’s outdoor riding arena, a 3 minute walk just north of the Norland on South Sunnyside Road. The centennial celebration will begin at 1:30PM and end with the flamenco performance at 4:30PM.

“Although the dress code for this event is informal attire, there will be a photo opportunity for which families and couples may want to dress more formally” says Joshua Reuben Fritz, the promoter. “I hope families will take this opportunity to get dressed up and enjoy their Sunday afternoon together outside” says Fritz. “The presenters have made it very accessible, so that no one should miss out”.

The event is presented in part by Davidson & Williams LLP, one of Alberta’s oldest law firms. Established in 1885 by Charles Frederick Pringle Conybeare, K.C., Lethbridge’s first lawyer, the firm shares much of the city’s history. Conybeare was instrumental in the establishment of what is now the Chamber of Commerce, and the historic Southminster United Church on 4th Avenue South. The firm's commitment to its community continues today as Richard Davidson, Q.C. serves the University of Lethbridge in his role as Chancellor, and Rodney Jerke, Q.C. serves the Law Society of Alberta as President.

An opportunity will be made available to attendees to contribute their knowledge of the property and area in a special memoir to be gifted to the Galt Museum and Archives for safe-keeping.

20% of ticket sale revenue will be directed to Gilead Foundation of Alberta, which is focused on operating an addictions healing centre just north of Lethbridge. Land was recently donated to the charity by Foundation Capital Corporation. “The program is based on a UK model with a very high success rate of recovery”, says project architect Alvin Fritz. “The long term programs are required for those with severe behavioral and substance addictions”. Gilead Foundation of Alberta founders Randy and Lori Philpot have been personally impacted by substance abuse, and are now focused on making this treatment centre a reality.

Tickets will be available though the ticket centre at 329-SEAT. Parking will be available in the pasture to the east of the Norland, with overflow parking at Green Haven Garden Centre on South Sunnyside Road.
